Sonic Migration

Janelle Monae | July 6, 2009

is amazing. She is chubby checkers, chuck berry, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, even a touch of Grace Jones and so much more. Her love of Broadway and Judy Garland comes through in her performances. Her music is alive with invigorating energy; it is theatrical and fun. And the lyrics can be powerful and relevant.

I caught the tail end of her opening performance for Raphael Saadiq at Bimbo’s 365. The last bit i caught was amazing.  She was rocking hard and then she went for the stage dive. It was great. Unfortunately, some of the audience seem like they didn’t know what to do with her.  Its okay though, after touring with erykah badu and working the summer festival circuit, folks have a opportunity to check her out and warm up to her.

To learn more about her, check out the interview with Terry Gross.
